He has put together a tasty mix for GloBeats to coincide with his recent new release “Losange Jaures” on Trueflav Records.

Get a listen to his new release here.

I caught up with Mister Bibal whose real name is Samuel Ludwig Salla, and asked him about his musical influences, the French beat scene and his new release.
Check out the mix below and hear for yourself why this young Parisian producer is la crème de la crème of the Parisian beat scene right now.

Interview with Mister Bibal

You were born in Cameroon but raised in France. Which country has helped form your music identity more?

I was born and raised in Cameroon. I came to France at the age of 14. I have been producing beats since I moved to France, and there are several factors that led me to that, but I have been influenced primarily by my Cameroonian experience. At that time I used to listen to my dad’s vinyl records, such as Stevie Wonder, Parliament, George Clinton, Louis Armstrong, Kool & The Gang. As you can see, I didn’t listen to a lot of African music, I was more into Afro-American music from the mid 70′s. Moreover, I had been watching TV and noticed that hip-hop really emerged and artists used a lot of samples from the same albums I used to listen to as a kid. That’s where I created my very own music DNA. So along with my Cameroonian background, France equivalently helped me, as in, you know, I had to ascertain what works best in terms of software and synths.

What French beat makers inspire you right now and what do you think makes the French scene so unique?

This country is really full of energy and talented people. It saddens me that very few French music producers emerged worldwide but it’s just a question of time. (We are coming.) France is a beautiful place with many different cultures, and I think we all are influenced by that. Many of us are a mix of both native land’s traditional culture (Asian, African, East European) and old French culture. The power of those two universes when combined together is what makes that scene unique.

In the video for your single “The Past” we get an insight into your home setup which consists of a microKorg and an MPC to mention a couple of items. What is the most important piece of studio equipment you own?

I bought a Juno-6, and ever since then, I can’t stop using it in a beat…The effects , a lead synth, no matter what, I absolutely need that sound! microKorg is also one of my most used synths in a studio session – overall, because it was my first real synth, and because it has a quite unique sound that is easy to catch. My mic is also a must-have, I always add some real drums, triangles, and real snaps.

You are known for using controllers when you play. How exactly does this system work?

I used to perform with MPD and microKorg. I controlled Traktor DJ Studio with MPD and added some synths, or played original synths with microKorg. During those 3 months I started using a new set. I still use the instrument I used previously but I’ve added some joysticks to control the Traktor effects and some samples. I’m a huge video game fan, so it’s easier to me to perform with it, and then it’s all about fun, using old joysticks live and all (mostly playstation 1).

There’s no denying that your productions have quite a funky edge. Is there any artist or scene throughout history, in particular, that has helped you form your identity?

As I’ve mentioned earlier, I was raised on 70′s music, with some real funk, old school funk. New artists like Dâm-Funk or Sa-Ra also have that funky background, and I have definitely been inspired and influenced by them.

Tell us about your new EP – Losange Juares, what is the concept behind the release?

It dropped on July 14. It’s one of my funkiest EPs ever! I mixed some old school funk style with new rhythms. It’s all about old school played by new school. It’s really influenced by George Clinton and West Coast funk. That’s why I decided to make a reference between Los Angeles and the album’s name. I took the word “Los Angeles”, cut it like “LosAnge les” and added the name of street I live in, “Jaures” – “Losange Jaures” (“Diamond Jaures” in French). That’s why you can see a diamond and Jaures’ head on the cover, he was a French politician.

Can you give us an insight into the mix you put together for us? how would you describe your selection?

I tried not to put well-known people because that would have been too easy to listen to, so I picked some close friends and mixed it with some well-known producers. I chose some boombap jazzy beats for the first part, and some new experimental beats to end it. By the way, I only used my joysticks to mix.

What’s in the future for Mister Bibal?

Losange Jaures 2.0 will drop next month on True Flav Records with more funky beats and a few featurings. I’ll also drop an EP with the singer Chiky B on Saturate Records, and a producer collaboration single with L Rey on Bunker Sounds this September.

Wackies is a New York based independent record label and studio, specialising in reggae and dub. Although still officially active, its modern presence is largely due to a decade old series of reissues by Mortiz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus. The Basic Channel/Rhythm & Sound duo have remastered a significant amount of the Wackies back-catalogue, preserving these cherished recordings and widening their availability. In celebration of the project’s 10th anniversary, Globeats has selected ten classic Wackies cuts.
